Will retire from politics, if TDP loses: Naidu

Will retire from politics, if TDP loses: Naidu

Not too long ago, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced at a public meeting that the 2024 assembly elections would mark his final political battle.

He went on to state that he wouldn't be seen in public life if he were to lose these elections.

In fact, as early as November 2021, Naidu had declared that he would not return to the assembly unless in the capacity of the chief minister of the state.

He visibly expressed his sentiment before the media, seemingly to garner sympathy from the people.

Fast forward to a recent announcement on Wednesday, where the TDP chief once again declared his potential retirement from politics, contingent on his party's performance in alliance with the Jana Sena Party.

Despite this, Naidu expressed confidence that the TDP-Jana Sena alliance would emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.

During an interview with Republic TV, Naidu emphasized that these forthcoming elections would be his last electoral battle.

When questioned about stepping down if his party doesn't secure victory in Andhra Pradesh, he stated, "From the beginning, I am very clear in my decision."

Naidu asserted that his fight against the Jagan Mohan Reddy government has been for the people and on their behalf, not for personal interests. He expressed belief that the people would understand his stance.

"If the people elect us to power, it is good. Otherwise, there are no regrets. I don’t feel bad if the people reject us. I will quietly retire from politics," Naidu said categorically.

The video clip of Naidu's comments has now gone viral. Regardless, Naidu, nearing 80 years, is expected to lack the energy for the next elections. This raises speculations about him handing over the party reins to either his son or another member of the NTR family.

This situation presents a strategic opportunity for the YSR Congress party, led by Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, to potentially dominate the TDP in the upcoming elections.

Analysts suggest that if the TDP were to come to power, it would likely solidify its position in the state for another 10 years.
