The rumour mills were active for the past three days with an eye on the cabinet meeting of the Jaganmohan Reddy government slated for today.
They expected the cabinet to take a call on the capital issue and make an announcement giving executive capital status to Visakhapatnam.
The opposition TDP and farmers from the capital villages have several plans on hands to intensify the agitation opposing shifting of the capital from Amaravati.
They initially planned to disturb the chief minister and other ministers travelling through their villages to attend the cabinet meeting. But it was thwarted by the police who issued prohibitory orders.
The TDP had pulled its sleeves up to get into action with its cadre getting ready to protest against the government decision.
It was expected that the cabinet would approve the recommendations of the G N Rao committee and Amaravati would thus become the legislative capital. The high court advocates too have set their gowns ready to be on the streets.
Giving them all a rude shock, the cabinet had differed a decision on the capital.
The cabinet after initial discussion, kept the report aside and wanted to wait for the report of the BCG (Boston Consulting Group), which was also asked to make a similar study that the G N Rao panel did.
The cabinet would discuss both the reports and also give them to high power committee for its recommendations.
The government would then take a call on the recommendations of the high power committee, in the second week of January, according to Minister for Information and Public Relations Perni Venkatramaiah (Nani), who briefed the media after the much-awaited cabinet meeting.
