The controversy over the Tirupati laddu being made with ghee allegedly adulterated with animal fat has now reached the Supreme Court, sparking nationwide outrage among Hindu religious groups and devotees.
On Monday, former Rajya Sabha member and public activist Dr. Subramanian Swamy filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition in the Supreme Court, raising concerns about the alleged use of substandard ingredients, including animal fat, in the preparation of the sacred laddus at Tirumala.
In his petition, Dr. Swamy requested the Supreme Court to issue a Writ of Mandamus or other appropriate orders to appoint a committee, which would be monitored by the court, to thoroughly investigate these allegations.
He emphasized that the issue not only concerns public health but also the sanctity of the religious offerings made to Lord Venkateswara.
Dr. Swamy also invoked Article 142 of the Constitution of India, seeking the Court’s intervention to ensure that justice is served, while protecting the public interest.
Additionally, the petition asks for any further orders the Court may deem necessary given the seriousness of the situation.
Dr. Swamy urged the Supreme Court to issue an interim directive for a detailed forensic report from the relevant authorities, specifically focusing on lab testing of the ghee used in the laddus, including its source and quality.
This PIL comes amidst growing concerns over the ingredients used in the iconic laddus, which are revered by millions of devotees across the country.
The petition stresses the importance of transparency and accountability to safeguard both the spiritual and health interests of the public.
Meanwhile, former TTD board chairman Y.V. Subba Reddy is reportedly planning to file a separate PIL in the Supreme Court, also seeking a court-monitored investigation into the allegations of substandard ghee being used at the Tirupati Tirumala Temple.
Reddy has requested the formation of an independent committee, led by a retired Supreme Court judge or experts, to investigate the matter.
The petition also calls for interim relief in the form of a detailed forensic report on the source and quality of the ghee, along with a temporary gag order on publicizing the issue to protect devotees' sentiments.
