Six Deputy Mayors For Visakhapatnam?

If YSR Congress party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has his way, there would be six deputy mayors for Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, which the party has won in the just-concluded elections.

Known for his aggressive style of politics and sensational decisions in running the administration, Jagan is learnt to have felt that there should be a perfected elected body for Greater Visakhapatnam municipal corporation in the wake of the port city being developed as executive capital.

Sources said Jagan has been doing a lot of exercise in the composition of the GVMC council giving due representation to all sections of people and who should be given which position.

In this connection, Jagan reportedly recalled his decision to appoint five deputy chief ministers to the state, who represent five different regions and five different communities. He is learnt to have mooted a similar proposal for GVMC elected body, too.

Accordingly, Jagan has reportedly suggested that there would be one Mayor for GVMC, but there would be at least six deputy mayors, representing six different zones of the corporation, so as to ensure equitable development of all zones uniformly.

“It is going to be a unique idea not only in the angle of social engineering, but also in terms of development. There is a talk that Jagan wants to promote educated and women in the selection of deputy mayors. If it happens, it is certain that Visakhapatnam would hit the national headlines for its unique development model,” sources said.
