The Vijayawada police on Wednesday kept Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president Y S Sharmila under house arrest at her villa in Vijayawada, preventing her from going to Amaravati capital city area, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on Friday.
She, along with her party leaders and cadre, wanted to go to Uddandarayunipalem village in Amaravati region, where Modi had laid the foundation stone for the capital city 10 years ago.
Apparently, she wanted to take a dig at Modi for ignoring the capital city for the last one decade and is now coming to Amaravati again in the name of relaunch of capital city works.
However, the police prevented her from leaving the house stating that there is no permission for her to go to Amaravati.
Speaking to reporters, Shamila wondered why the police had placed her under house arrest.
“Why is this kind of oppression against a party president? Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Home Minister Anitha Garu must give an explanation,” she said.
Stating that Amaravati is our capital city, she said everybody has the right to visit the capital city.
“What is wrong in wanting to see how the capital is doing? Is it wrong to do study what is going on in Amaravati?” she asked.
Sharmila said she had formed an Amaravati Capital Committee from the Congress party and planned to visit Amaravati to see the status of works.
“Why are you scared? What are you trying to hide in Amaravati capital?” she asked.
She also found fault with the police for preventing her to go to her party office to discuss the action plan.
“Prime Minister Modi is coming on the 2nd of this month. There are many issues that need to be raised with Modi. Don’t we have the right to speak on those issues?” she asked.
She alleged that the police manhandled her at her residence.
“Is this how you treat women? Don’t I have the right to protest or hold demonstrations? Remember, you are not dictators,” she warned.
