Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president Y S Sharmila has once again spit venom on her brother and YSR Congress party president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, describing his decision to boycott the state assembly session as “stupid” and “foolish.”
In a statement on Monday, Sharmila said people had not voted for Jagan and his party MLAs not to run away from the assembly on the pretext that they are not given the leader of the opposition status or won’t be given a chance to speak in the assembly.
“You were not get elected to sit at home and speak through your mouth-piece media. It is only because of your own wrong-doings that the people have not given you the leader of the opposition status. To say that you will enter the assembly only if you are given the LoP status shows your foolishness and stupidity,” she said.
Stating that the legislative assembly is a temple of democracy, Sharmila said it was a big opportunity to the elected members to represent the problems of the people and pull up the ruling party on people’s issues.
“The NDA government in the state has failed to implement the Super Six guarantees and other promises made before the elections. There is a law and order crisis in the state and there have been atrocities on women. Sand mafia is ruling the roost and the belt shops are proliferating. No jobs have been fulfilled and there is a rampant unemployment,” she pointed out.
Sharmila said instead of exposing all these failures of the government, the YSRCP led by Jagan is running away from its responsibility on the pretext that he was not given the leader of the opposition status.
“It is shameful and unfortunate on the part of Jagan to raise his voice in the House on behalf of the people,” she said.
She recalled that in 1994, during the period of combined Andhra Pradesh, the Congress did not forget its responsibility, despite the fact that it had won only 26 out of 294 assembly seats.
“The Congress was never bothered about the leader of opposition status. It cornered the then TDP government on many issues,” she said.
Similarly, the Congress got only 44 Lok Sabha seats in 2014 and 52 in 2019, yet it did not demand any LOP status.
“Without asking for any such status, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have been effectively fighting for the people’s issues,” she pointed out.
