The authorities of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) on Wednesday began demolition of alleged illegal constructions belonging to YSR Congress party general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP V Vijayasai Reddy’s daughter Neha Reddy on the beach front at Bheemili.

The GVMC authorities served notices on Neha Reddy on September 2, asking her to see that demolitions of the compound wall and pillars for a massive building on the Bheemil beach be carried out within 24 hours, failing which the commission itself would take up the demolitions.

After the completion of the deadline, the GVMC moved bulldozers to the place and began the demolitions. For now, there was no resistance from Neha Reddy or her people while the demolitions were being carried out.

On August 24, the Andhra Pradesh high court instructed the GVMC to take action against the construction of an unlawful compound wall at Bheemili Beach, which violates Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) regulations. The court also asked the GVMC officials to submit a detailed report on the actions taken.

A division bench of the high court comprising chief justice Dheeraj Singh Thakur and Justice Cheemalapati Ravi, gave the directions after hearing the arguments on the public interest litigation petition filed by Jana Sena corporator P Murthy Yadav alleging that officials had not taken any action despite the illegal constructions near Bheemili beach.

Neha Reddy had challenged the petition by filing an appeal before a single judge, but the judge did not issue any interim stay orders. The high court ruled that no concrete structures should be constructed on the beach.
