Senior YSR Congress party legislator and former minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy might drop from the contest in the next assembly elections to make way for his son and present MP Mithun Reddy.
This was indicated by Mithun Reddy himself at a meeting of party workers in his father’s assembly constituency Punganuru on Monday.
He told them that he might contest the next assembly elections from Punganuru, in the event of delimitation the assembly constituencies by 2029.
The Centre has indicated recently that there might be delimitation of assembly constituencies in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana by 2026, as per the AP Reorganisation Act of 2014.
In that case, the number of assembly constituencies in AP will go up from 175 to 225 and in Telangana, from 119 to 153.
Mithun Reddy told the party leaders and cadre that if the delimitation happens, the boundaries of the present assembly constituencies will undergo changes.
“If that happens, I shall contest the next elections from Punganur,” he said.
He, however, said the delimitation would be possible only after the completion of the census, which has not happened after 2011. It should have been done in 2021, but did not happen due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Mithun Reddy, however, did not talk about what his father and present MLA Ramachandra Reddy will do after 2029 – whether he will drop out from the contest or choose other constituency, or contest the Parliament elections.
