Ever since the National Democratic Alliance comprising Telugu Desam, Jana Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party came to power by winning the assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh last week, there has been an intense debate on what portfolio Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan would get.
While it has been confirmed that he would be rewarded with deputy chief minister post, the Jana Sena Party workers have been spreading the news that Pawan would have to be given the home portfolio, as they think it would give him full control over the police administration in the state.
However, what the Jana Sena workers do not know is that the home portfolio is just an ornamental, as it doesn’t have much powers and the entire law and order machinery would be under the control of the chief minister.
During the Jagan Mohan Reddy government, too, the home portfolio was given to women MLAs like Mekathoti Sucharitha and Taneti Vanitha, who had absolutely no knowledge about the developments in police administration.
Even in the previous TDP government, it was held by Nimmakayala Chinna Rajappa, who had no control over the police machinery. He doesn’t have powers even to transfer the police officials without the approval of the chief minister.
Sources said in any case, Pawan Kalyan might not like to accept serious portfolios which require full-time attention. He is learnt to be interested in portfolios like panchayat raj and rural development or environment and forests. But since he is holding the deputy chief minister position, he might even be offered revenue portfolio.
However, his cabinet colleague Nadendla Manohar, who is an experienced politician, is said to be asking for a key portfolio like education, housing or even medical and health.
Another Jana Sena minister Kandula Durgesh is said to be asking for agriculture or roads and buildings portfolio.
On the other hand, lone BJP minister Y Satya Kumar might be given an important portfolio like mining and energy portfolio.
