The Andhra Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, currently has no plans to increase or reorganize the existing districts in the state.
This was confirmed by State Revenue Minister Anagani Satyaprasad during a discussion in the Legislative Council on Friday.
Responding to queries from several MLCs regarding district reorganization, he stated that no such proposals are under consideration at the moment.
Satyaprasad criticized the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government for carrying out district reorganization in an unscientific and haphazard manner, without even discussing the matter in the state cabinet.
He reiterated, "We don’t have any such proposal right now."
However, he mentioned that the government is positively considering the formation of new revenue divisions in Addanki and Madakasira. Additionally, there are proposals to establish Emmiganur and Udayagiri as new revenue divisions.
Interestingly, in early February, the TDP politburo had a detailed discussion on district organization and the creation of new districts.
The politburo urged the government to consider public demands, particularly from Markapuram, for the formation of a new district.
It also suggested the creation of 1-2 additional districts and a scientific study to assess the merging of certain constituencies into nearby districts.
In 2022, the YSRCP government undertook district reorganization based on its electoral promise to create one district per Lok Sabha constituency.
The only exception was the creation of Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) and Parvatipuram-Manyam districts, which were added to accommodate tribal constituencies.
Despite opposition from experts, who argued that district boundaries should not be linked to Lok Sabha constituencies, as they would change after delimitation, the Jagan government proceeded with its plan.
Although Naidu had promised to address anomalies in district reorganization after coming to power, he now appears hesitant to alter the existing districts.
He is also not considering changes to district headquarters, despite multiple representations from local communities requesting such revisions.
