Naidu to revive 'Janmabhoomi' plan!

Telugu Desam Party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, during his earlier stint in the combined Andhra Pradesh between 1995 and 2004, came up with an innovative scheme called “Janmabhoomi.”

Under this scheme, Naidu had involved all sections of people, particularly industrialists and Non-Resident Indians from the state in the development of their respective areas in the state.

They would either contribute their mite to the state government in taking up developmental works in their native villages in Andhra Pradesh or adopt their own villages for development, involving people of the villages.

It was a sort of community participation in developmental works, like laying of roads, construction of culverts and bridges, building of houses for weaker sections or construction of community halls or development of greenery etc.

Though there was very good response to the scheme from NRIs and other philanthropists, the scheme fizzled out in the subsequent years due to lack of proper supervision and maintenance.

Now, Naidu wants to revive the scheme. At the Telugu Desam Party politburo meeting on Thursday, the chief minister announced that he would launch the Janmabhoomi 2.0 scheme again to bring about change at the grassroots level and involve public-private participation in the development.

“We shall launch the programme soon after discussing it with the ministers thoroughly and issue official orders. We want to involve the common people and also NRIs in the process,” the chief minister said, adding that this was what he had meant by returning to 1995-style of administration.

Naidu also hinted at bringing in major administrative reforms. An action plan would be readied in this regard. The politburo also discussed the implementation of SC categorisation with district as a unit.
