Kapu quota: Mudragada pleads, Chegondi fights

Former minister and Kapu leader from West Godavari district Chegondi Venkata Harirama Jogaiah, who has been desperately trying to get back into active politics, has found the latest statement from the Centre on Kapu reservations a big opportunity to get some limelight.

The 85-year-old leader on Tuesday declared that he was prepared to die for achieving reservations for Kapus in Andhra Pradesh.

“Even if it costs my life, I will continue my fight for Kapu reservations,” Jogaiah said while speaking to media.

He said Kapus should be given 5 percent reservation out of 10 per cent quota given to Economically Weaker Sections through a Constitutional amendment by the Centre.

“If Kapus cannot be treated as BCs, they should be given reservations at least under EBC quota,” he said.

Jogaiah demanded that the Jagan Mohan Reddy government in AP should come out with a decision on Kapu reservations by December 30.

“Otherwise, I will launch fast-unto-death from January 2. At least with my death, I hope Kapus will get reservations,” he said.

He alleged that Jagan was not interested in the uplift of Kapus economically and politically. That was he had removed the quota for Kapus, Jogaiah commented.

Interestingly, it was only on Monday that former minister and Kapu leader Mudragada Padmanabham wrote a letter to the chief minister on the same issue in a requesting tone.

He pleaded with Jagan to give 5 per cent quota for Kapus in education and employment so that Kapus will be grateful to him lifelong.

“You have been doing a lot of good for the poor people through your welfare schemes. You will remain forever in the hearts of Kapus, if you give them five percent quota,” he said.
