Jagan to attend assembly for an hour?

YSR Congress Party president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, who has repeatedly stated that he will not attend Assembly sessions unless granted Leader of the Opposition (LoP) status, is reportedly reconsidering his stance—albeit temporarily.

According to party sources, Jagan has decided to attend the budget session of the State Assembly, which begins on Monday, along with his party MLAs. However, their attendance is expected to be for just one day.

Jagan, along with his party MLAs and MLCs, will attend the joint session of the Assembly and Council, which will be addressed by Governor S. Abdul Nazeer—a mandatory protocol on the first day of the first session of the year.

Jagan has called for a YSR Congress Legislature Party (YSRCLP) meeting on Monday morning, after which they will proceed to the Assembly. However, he has yet to decide whether he will continue attending the sessions from Tuesday onwards.

“His decision on attending further Assembly sessions will depend on the prevailing circumstances. Most likely, Jagan will not return to the session after Monday, and it is unclear whether his party MLAs will follow suit,” sources said.

Jagan’s decision to attend the session is believed to be a strategic move to preempt any action by State Assembly Speaker Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu to disqualify him from Assembly membership for continuously skipping sessions.

The state government is set to present the Budget for the 2025-26 financial year on February 28 and is considering conducting Assembly sessions for a total of 15 working days.

The final decision on the session's duration will be taken on the first day, following a Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, sources said.
