Jagan govt drops chapter on Amaravati in text books

The Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government in Andhra Pradesh is firm on its decision to create three capital cities for the state in place of existing capital city of Amaravati and is only waiting for the verdict of the judiciary in this regard.

The state government has completely dumped Amaravati capital project – it has dissolved the AP Capital Region Development Authority, brought to halt all the ongoing works in the capital and abandoned already constructed works.

The only structures that indicate the capital city at Amaravati are state secretariat and assembly at Velagapudi and interim high court complex at Nelapadu. All the other projects have been gathering dust.

In its latest decision to erase Amaravati capital city from the minds of the people, the Jagan government ordered removal of the chapter on Amaravati in the Telugu text book of the Class X students.

The text book, revised during the Telugu Desam Party regime in 2014, had 12 lessons. The second lesson was on Amaravati, its ancient history and its cultural significance.

It also has a few paragraphs on why it was chosen as the state capital and how it is going to shape up as a world-class city.

Interestingly, the text book with chapter on Amaravati continued even after Jagan Mohan Reddy came to power and decided on the three capitals formation.

This year, too, the schools continued the same text books and teachers have already taught the topic on Amaravati to the students.

But, recently, the Jagan government ordered withdrawal of the Class 10 Telugu text book. It published the text books afresh with only 11 chapters, thereby removing the chapter on Amaravati.

The government ordered that only the revised Telugu text book be supplied to the students and that the teachers should not take the chapter of Amaravati into consideration while conducting the examinations.
