YSR Congress party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy once again took pot shots at actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan of Jana Sena Party who has been making wild allegations against the former.
Intervening during a discussion on atrocities on women in the state assembly on Monday, Jagan indirectly referred to Pawan Kalyan’s multiple marriages.
“Some so-called big leaders these days are not content with marrying one, but two or three or even four wives. Such marriages are called polygamies,” he pointed out.
He said there were as many as 216 such polygamies in the state in 2014, 264 in 2015, 240 in 2016, 262 in 2017 and 195 in 2018.
“I was deeply anguished over the rape and murder of Disha in Hyderabad. I felt there was nothing wrong in shooting down the accused, as I am also worried about my family. I, too, have two daughters, a sister and a wife,” he said and added after a pause: “I have only one wife,” amidst peels of laughter in the House.
Since Pawan Kalyan is not a member of the assembly, Jagan Mohan Reddy was cautious enough to take his name.
But his comments were obviously aimed at targeting the Jana Sena chief, whose multiple marriages have been raised by the YSRC chief a couple of times in the past.
However, YSRC MLA R K Roja chose to attack Pawan taking his name, for saying that rapists could be punished with a couple of cane lashes, as nobody has a right to take other’s life.
“This great leader was only party president who lost in both the constituencies he had contested. Why did he wield his gun in public in the past? Why did he want to kill the people who ragged his sister?” Roja asked.
She would have made more serious comments had Speaker Tammineni Sitaram not stopped her saying she cannot take the name of a person who is not a member of the assembly.
