The questioning of All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate authorities in connection with the National Herald scam has not generated any sympathy for the family among the people.
Except the Congress party’s rank and file and some opposition parties supporting it who raised a hue and cry over the alleged witch-hunt of Sonia and Rahul by the Narendra Modi government, there has generally been some kind of apathy among the people.
On the other hand, the Gandhi family had to face a lot of trolling on the social media platforms. Netizens recall how Sonia and Rahul had indulged in witch-hunt of their political rivals during the United Progressive Alliance regime, while shielding their own corrupt colleagues.
The classic example of this witch-hunt was YSR Congress party president and present Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. Just because he had defied Sonia’s dikatats and went ahead with his Odarpu Yatra, he was forced to come out of the Congress and float his own party.
And within no time, the then Congress government foisted CBI and ED cases against him on the alleged quid pro quo and money laundering charges. Jagan had to be behind the bars for 16 months.
In the last eight years, things have changed completely. While Jagan fought back strongly and became the chief minister with a huge public mandate, the popularity graph of Sonia and Rahul had taken a nosedive and the Congress under their leadership, continued to face electoral debacles.
Now, Sonia and Rahul are paying penalty for harassing Jagan and other political rivals during the UPA regime. The same investigation agencies – the CBI and the ED, which Sonia had used to witch-hunt Jagan and others, are now grilling them for hours together.
While Jagan could gain the sympathy of the people and come to power. Sonia and Rahul have lost the sympathy of the people and the chances of their returning to power appear to be very bleak.
