The Election Commission on Tuesday withdrew the “Glass” symbol given to a candidate in the Tirupati Lok Sabha Constituency by-election.
The EC’s decision comes after a delegation of the Jana Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party meeting chief election commissioner Sunil Arora in Delhi on Monday.
The allocation of “Glass” to a candidate in the by-election created ripples in the BJP and the Jana Sena combine.
The Jana Sena is not contesting the election and had extended support to the BJP candidate.
Since the Jana Sena is only a registered party with the EC, the officials have allocated its Glass symbol to a candidate creating confusion among the Jana Sena voters.
The “Glass” symbol was given to the Jana Sena in the 2014 Assembly elections. The party had won just one MLA seat in the 175-member House.
The Jana Sena could not fulfil the conditions of the EC to retain the symbol following which the officials allocated it to a candidate.
However, the BJP led a delegation with a couple of senior ministers from the Central government and members of Rajya Sabha leading it.
They raised objections over the use of the Glass symbol and requested the EC to withdraw it.
After considering the request, the EC issued orders on late Tuesday withdrawing the Glass symbol, giving some sigh of relief to both the BJP and the Jana Sena.
