Prominent writer and former Rajya Sabha member Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad on Wednesday announced his resignation from the post of Andhra Pradesh Official Languages Commission, in protest against the renaming of NTR University of Health Sciences after late Y S Rajasekhar Reddy.
He submitted his resignation within hours of the Jagan Mohan Reddy government taking the decision to rename the health university after YSR and introducing a legislation in the assembly to that effect.
Yarlagadda further announced that he was also quitting the posts of AP Hindi Academy chairman post.
He said the decision taken by the Jagan government was not correct and he strongly desired that the name of the university should be continued as NTR University of Health Sciences, after the legendary actor and former chief minister.
Yarlagadda, who had earlier worked as a lecturer of Hindi in Andhra University in the past, had been a tutor of Hindi for NTR when the latter entered national politics in late 80s.
He entered politics only at the instance of NTR. He later became a close associate of NTR’s son Nandamuri Harikrishna and got nominated to Rajya Sabha member along with the latter.
The TDP members had earlier demanded the resignation of NTR followers in YSR Congress party, including Yarlagadda and Nandamuri Lakshmi Parvathi, besides die-hard fans of NTR like Kodali Nani and Vallabhaneni Vamsi.
