AP wants control over all reservoirs on Krishna river

The Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government on Wednesday asked a direction from the Supreme Court to have Andhra Pradesh take control of the common reservoirs of Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar and also Pulichintala Reservoir along with all their outlets built on Krishna river.

In a petition filed before the Supreme Court, the Jagan government alleged that the Telangana was denying Andhra Pradesh its legitimate share of water in Krishna river for drinking and irrigation purposes.

It said the water level in Srisailam reservoir has seriously depleted on account of use of water from it generation of power in Telangana.

"This has caused immense hardship for people of Andhra Pradesh as availability of water has been seriously prejudiced by depletion in Srisailam Dam project as well as other projects such as the Nagarjuna Sagar Project and the Pulichintala Project," the petition said.

The AP government contended that the actions of the Telangana government were unconstitutional and in violation of right to life of people of Andhra Pradesh.

“Therefore, the Supreme Court’s intervention is sought to have Andhra Pradesh take control of the common Reservoirs of Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar and also Pulichintala Reservoir along with all their outlets,” the petition said.

The AP government also accused the Telangana government of not following the decisions of the apex council and directions of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) and also that of the Government of India.

It also regretted that the Central government has not notified yet the areas where the KRMB will have jurisdiction on Godavari and Krishna rivers with regard to any of the projects over head works (barrages, dams, reservoirs, regulating structures), part of canal network and transmission lines.

“Because of this, Telangana is seriously affecting the water supply to Andhra Pradesh for irrigation and other purposes,” it said.
