Tirupati: The coronavirus cases continue to wreak havoc nationwide and hospitals are overwhelmed owing to the rise in cases and are raising SOS alarms from time to time citing hospital beds, oxygen, and life-saving drugs shortage.
Another tragic incident owing to interruption in the oxygen supply chain was reported from Andhra Pradesh’s Ruia Hospital. At least 11 COVID-19 patients who were on ventilators died.
The incident took place after an oxygen tanker reached the hospital five minutes late.
The Chittoor District Collector Harinarayan added that the major tragedy was averted as oxygen supply was immediately restored. Doctors are monitoring the situation and at least 30 of them are inside the ICU.
Expressing deepest condolences to the family of the victims, CM Jagan Mohan has announced ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to every family of the deceased. He further asked the collectors to be more vigilant to avoid such mishaps in future courses.
The CM added, "There is a need to be more focused in tackling these situations. Let us take ownership. Ensure that Rs. 10 lakh ex-gratia is given to the families of the deceased. Give them a humane touch. Let us become more humane."
He also stressed that efforts are being made to transport oxygen through various sources. Empty tankers are being airlifted to Odisha and all efforts are on to procure oxygen through navy and other means.
