The attempted murder case, along with other charges under the Indian Penal Code, against senior IPS officer P.V. Sunil Kumar appears to be taking on a caste angle, as Christian Dalit groups have taken serious note of the complaint against him.
Even though Sunil Kumar is an IPS officer, who is supposed to be above all caste equations, he has openly championed the Dalit cause during his tenure in the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy regime.
In fact, his personal profile on X shows that he is an IPS officer and satirical writer.
“Advocating tech governance & Dalit self-rule. Committed to justice, equality, dignity. Ambedkarite at heart,” the profile says.
On Saturday, Sunil Kumar claimed on X that he had been a nodal officer to deal with SC/ST atrocities cases when he was the CID chief.
“I got chargesheets filed in more than 3,000 atrocity cases in the state and ensured that the victims got compensation,” he said.
He also tweeted that whenever there was any problem for Dalits, he would be at the forefront to take up their cause and stand by them. “Jai Bheem,” he said.
There were protests by some Dalit groups across the state against the FIR filed against Sunil Kumar. At Ambedkar Centre in Vizianagaram, protests were held against the cases filed against the Dalit IPS officer.
At the same time, former IPS officer and current Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader in Telangana, R.S. Praveen Kumar, also expressed shock over the FIR filed against Sunil Kumar and P.S.R. Anjaneyulu.
“This matter pertains to the alleged custodial torture of former YSRCP MP Raghu Rama Krishnam Raju (RRR) in AP in 2021. This issue was closely monitored by the higher courts in India at the time, and nothing came of it. What would have changed in these three years except the ruling dispensation? Why the sudden FIR after a gap of three years?” he asked.
He lamented that sincere policemen have become victims of vendetta politics in this country. Political parties have recently begun demonizing officers known for their no-nonsense approach through their social media troll brigades, he said.
Referring to Raghu Rama Krishnam Raju, the retired IPS officer said: “This same politician, a habitual liar, leveled baseless allegations against me on the floor of parliament in 2021. This guy was never in favor of the emancipation of the poor through education. I am perplexed as to how he has become an MLA again,” he said.
He demanded that the false cases of vendetta registered against the senior police officers and others in AP and elsewhere must be immediately withdrawn.
