Amaravati works to resume: Civic polls effect?

Amaravati works to resume: Civic polls effect?

The Andhra Pradesh cabinet led by chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday decided to complete the abandoned roads and underground drainage network in Amaravati region.

The cabinet decided that the state government would stand guarantee to the commercial banks to lend Rs 3,000 crore to Amaravati Metropolitan Development Authority (AMRD) to complete the trunk infrastructure works and land pooling scheme works, including completion of buildings which are under construction.

In another crucial decision, the cabinet also decided to reimburse the amount collected from the weaker sections for the completion of weaker section houses by the previous TDP government under Andhra Pradesh Township and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APTIDCO).

These houses would be handed over to over 1.44 lakh beneficiaries at a nominal cost of Re 1. The amount which the beneficiaries had already paid would be returned to them in the form of subsidy. And these colonies would be named as “Jagananna Nagar Colonies.”

Apparently, the decisions are aimed at appeasing the voters of the urban areas in the ensuing municipal elections. This talk has already started circulating in the social media groups of the Telugu Desam Party.

“For the last 20 months, the road and building works in Amaravati have been left abandoned. Now, the government has taken sudden decision to complete them at a cost of Rs 3,000 crore. With this, the YSRC wants to appease the voters in Amaravati municipal areas,” a social media post said.

State minister for information and public relations Perni Nani, however, said the completion of works in Amaravati did not mean the government has changed its mind on three capitals.

“We have already taken a decision to shift the executive capital to Visakhapatnam and there is no question of going back on that. Amaravati will remain the legislative capital and the people have to decide what exactly they want,” he said.
