“On the lines of Hyderabad, I wanted to create a world-class capital, Amaravati, for Andhra Pradesh. With his 3 capitals theory, YS Jagan has destroyed the potential of Amaravati,” said Chandrababu Naidu.
In hindsight, though, Amaravati will probably go down as the biggest political blunder of Chandrababu Naidu’s career. People simply did not believe in the sincerity of the intentions behind the ‘new capital’.
The Sivaramakrishna committee, appointed by Chandrababu himself to suggest a new capital area for Andhra, was completely against Amaravati. Why did Chandrababu not listen to the experts?
Amaravati was one mammoth real estate venture specifically designed to enrich Chandrababu’s community. This theory was believed by the people, and the YSRCP successfully leveraged this aspect on social media.
At a time when the state was shattered following bifurcation, and people were looking for confidence-building initiatives, Amaravati appeared to be an opportunity to exploit the situation rather than a symbol of real progress.
Instead of putting AP ahead of everything else, Chandrababu prioritized his ‘community’. This created a massive anti-Kamma atmosphere in the state, which eventually led to the electoral downfall of the TDP.
If a book were to be written on the life of Chandrababu, Amaravati would constitute a significant part of it, representing his biggest political blunder.
