Amaravati farmers gearing up for yet another stir

Farmers of Amaravati, who have been lying low after they received a setback in the high court on prevention of land distribution for the poor to construct Jagananna housing colonies in the capital region, are gearing up for yet another agitation.

Amaravati Parirakshana Samithi president Srinivasa Rao has announced that the farmers would take up a movement opposing the creation of Residential Zone (R-5) in Amaravati for the weaker sections housing colony.

As part of the agitation, the farmers would take out a padayatra from NTR Ghat in Hyderabad to Uddarayunipalem village in Amaravati where Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid foundation stone for the capital city.

The padayatra will commence on July 17 and will culminate in a public meeting at Uddandaryunipalem village.

In the second phase, the farmers would conduct “Gadapa Gadakapu Amaravati” programme in Tadikonda, Mangalagiri and other areas in and around Amaravati region.

“In the third phase, we shall take up a rath yatra in all the 175 assembly constituencies, with the sole intention of defeating Jagan Mohan Reddy and his party in the next assembly elections,” Rao said, adding that it is not proper to distribute the capital land, meant for industrial and commercial purposes, to the poor.

Simulateneously, the Amaravati farmers filed a review petition in the high court, requesting a direction to the Jagan government to stop construction of houses for the poor in Amaravati.

They reiterated that the allotment of lands for the housing is illegal and is against the judgement of the three-member bench of the state high court. Even the Supreme Court said the land allotment would be subject the final judgement of the court and the allottees would have no permanent right on the land till the case is disposed of.

The Jagan government has already taken up distribution of pattas for the housing scheme in the R-5 zone of Amaravati. The chief minister will lay foundation stone for the housing scheme on July 8, official sources said.
