Star director Harish Shankar’s foray into the OTT space happened this week with the release of the ZEE5 web series ‘ATM’. At eight episodes and a running time of approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes, this Telugu-language C Chandra Mohan directorial attempts to pack a number of ingredients. Like most web series, it ends with a cliffhanger and a lead to the next season.
Jagan (Sunny VJ of Bigg Boss Telugu fame) and his three childhood buddies (Krishna, Raviraj, Roiel Shree) play underdogs. When one of them steals a vintage car out of greed, they get sucked into a roller-coaster game of survival after they sell the car to someone. The car contains local ganglord's diamonds worth Rs 10 crore. Jagan and his friends get caught by the gang, who force them to trace the car and the diamonds within 10 days.
How do the poor folks manage to earn Rs 10 crore now? They plan an ATM van robbery. When they execute the plan, a sharp-witted, trigger-happy cop named Hegde (Subbaraju) enters the scene.
Prudhvi plays a wannabe MLA named Gajendra, who has unabashedly crushed the dreams of Jagan and exploited the latter's father over and over. Divya Vani, as CI Uma Devi, gets to emote through her reckless and arrogant body language. Divi Vadthya and Harshini play girl-next-door lovebirds.
Prashanth R Vihari's background music and montage songs stylize several segments. Monic Kumar G's cinematography captures the bylanes of Hyderabad and the jungle.
The show needed to be more coherent and less lengthy. The first three episodes needed better pacing.
All in all, 'ATM' makes for a thrilling watch, especially the final two episodes. Dil Raju Productions ensures good production values.
