Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah recently shared his perspective on the prevalence of hypermasculinity in films, expressing his inability to watch movies like "RRR" and "Pushpa: The Rise."
He questioned the appeal of such films and affirmed his decision not to view them. However, he did mention his admiration for Mani Ratnam's "Ponniyin Selvan."
When asked about the fascination with hypermasculinity in films, particularly referencing movies like "Kabir Singh," Naseeruddin Shah explained in an episode of "Be A Man Yaar," saying, "Mardo ki insecurity badh rahi hai isiliye aur bhi zayda zor diya ja raha hai hypermasculinity ko. America me toh Marvel ki duniya chal rahi hai, sab superhero hai (The insecurity of men is increasing, which is why hypermasculinity is being emphasized. Even in America, with the Marvel Universe, it is happening)."
He noted that a similar trend is emerging in Indian cinema but acknowledged that smaller, content-driven films like "A Wednesday" are also finding an audience.
He expressed confidence in the younger generation's appreciation for films like those made by Anurag Kashyap, such as "Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi" and "Gulmohar." However, he admitted to wondering what people derive from watching films that highlight hypermasculinity, apart from excitement.
He mentioned that he attempted to watch "RRR" and "Pushpa" but couldn't continue. On the other hand, he praised Mani Ratnam's "Ponniyin Selvan" because he considers him a capable filmmaker with no hidden agenda.
In a separate part of the interview, Naseeruddin Shah also questioned the appeal of "RRR" among women, saying, "I don't know how many women liked 'RRR.'"
"RRR," "Pushpa," and "Ponniyin Selvan" are among the most successful pan-India films released in recent years.
"RRR" is directed by SS Rajamouli and gained global acclaim, with its song "Naatu Naatu" winning India's first-ever Best Original Song award at the Oscars.
"Pushpa" stars Allu Arjun and achieved commercial success, revitalizing the box office after the pandemic.
