His sister and actress Sujitha revealed that Surya Kiran's decision to produce a film resulted in substantial financial losses leading to the sale of all his properties.

Reports suggest that he had been suffering from jaundice for some years and passed away unexpectedly due to a heart attack during treatment. But the Film Director's Association released a press note stating that he died of Liver Cirrhosis.
