Prasad IMAX vs Mythri: Revenue Battle

Prasad IMAX vs Mythri: Revenue Battle

Prasad IMAX was the first multiplex in Hyderabad, paving the way for other chains to establish themselves in the city.

Over the years, multiplexes in Hyderabad have operated under a unified association, fostering cooperation and mutual decision-making.

However, recently, some multiplexes in Hyderabad have broken away from this tradition, making independent decisions that have disrupted the association's unity.

This shift did not sit well with Ramesh Prasad of Prasad IMAX, who felt sidelined as other multiplex owners began acting independently.

Ramesh Prasad raised his concerns with the association, pointing out how these unilateral actions have left him isolated, threatening the collaborative spirit that once defined the city's multiplex ecosystem.

Here is the complete story- The release of Pushpa 2 sparked controversy between Prasad IMAX, Hyderabad's iconic multiplex, and Mythri Distributors.

It is known that multiplexes work in profit share basis but not on rental system unlike the single screend do. At the core of the dispute is a 2.5% revenue-sharing difference.

Multiplexes typically split ticket revenue with distributors—PVR and Inox follow a 45:55 model, giving 55% to distributors. However, Prasad IMAX retains 47.5%, offering only 52.5% to distributors.

This discrepancy led Mythri Distributors to demand 55% for Pushpa 2, threatening to withhold the film otherwise.

Prasad IMAX stood firm, refusing to screen the film, escalating the matter to the Multiplex Association of India.

If PVR/Inox revise their percentages to match Prasad’s 52.5%, it could standardize lower payouts and leave distributors like Mythri unsatisfied.

Adding to the stakes is Mythri’s upcoming release, Robin Hood. If the revenue-sharing standoff continues, the film’s release could face challenges, risking box office performance.

The controversy has highlighted ongoing tensions between multiplex operators and distributors over revenue splits. Whether compromise or further conflict emerges remains to be seen.
