"Virupaksha" is the latest film to demonstrate that achieving pan-India success is not easy.
South Indian films such as "Kantara" and "Karthikeya 2" were huge hits in Hindi, leading to the release of every successful Telugu, Tamil, or Kannada film on a pan-Indian scale. However, none of them have worked.
"Virupaksha," the latest one to bomb during its pan-India release, was a huge success in Telugu and became Sai Dharam Tej's biggest hit. The team decided to release it in Tamil, Hindi, and other languages.
So, Sai Dharam Tej, Samyuktha, the director, and the producer aggressively promoted the film in Chennai, Bengaluru, Cochin, and Mumbai.
However, it did not work in any other language. The film was released in other languages over the weekend but did not receive any noticeable collections. The Hindi version was a complete failure, with not even 5% of the expected openings.
While "The Kerala Story" and "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" were the top-grossing films in India last weekend, "Virupaksha" was an outright flop.
"Kantara" and "Karthikeya 2" worked well because of their devotional angle, in addition to being well-narrated dramas.
