I Failed To Impress Chiranjeevi Then: Upendra

Kannada star Upendra is making his directorial comeback with the film UI, in which he will be seen in dual roles. The team celebrated the pre-release event for the film today.

Upendra shared his thoughts on how Tollywood has grown, with movies now grossing between 1000 to 2000 crores.

Speaking about UI, Upendra revealed that the story is set in the future, specifically in 2040.

“This movie, UI, is set in a somewhat imaginary world. The narrative will be very different from the very beginning. The film will be metaphorical. I strongly believe you will decode it. You’ve seen the mythological Kalki; now you’ll see the psychological Kalki in this movie,” he explained.

Upendra also shared that he has maintained a good rapport with megastar Chiranjeevi for more than 25 years.

“In 1996, I travelled with Chiranjeevi for a year with the idea of working on a film with him. I realized the stories I was telling didn’t match his range. I failed to impress him with my stories. That’s when I understood how big a star he truly was.”

UI, produced by Lahari Films and Venus Entertainers, will be released in Telugu through Allu Aravind’s Geetha Arts on December 20th.
