Mallika Sherawat has once again grabbed attention, this time for her role in Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, a recent Bollywood release.
During the promotion of the film, Mallika has been candid with the media, and her interview with Hauterrfly has drawn significant attention.
The actress spoke openly about the double standards surrounding erotic scenes in Indian films and how women's desires have long been monetized in the industry.
“For years, women’s sexuality has been used to sell everything—from soaps to cars, washing machines, and refrigerators,” Mallika said, pointing out the objectification of women in cinema.
She recalled a bizarre experience during a shoot in the South where she was asked to perform a provocative stunt.
“They wanted me to cook rotis on my waist to sell my hotness. I refused, but it speaks volumes about the mentality we are dealing with.”
Mallika also reflected on how public backlash influenced her early career choices. She recalled the negative reactions to her films, with people going so far as to burn effigies of her.
“We are fine with vulgarity when it’s for the box office, but then you turn around and abuse me for it. People took the liberty of burning effigies,” she said, referencing the violence and criticism she faced.
“There's been progress now, and such outdated views are being pushed to the sidelines. But back then, I was simply stating facts,” she added.
One of the most painful experiences for Mallika was being criticized by her colleagues.
"The most unfortunate part was being targeted by my peers, who probably thought slandering me would enhance their image.”
Despite these challenges, Mallika has earned respect for speaking out against industry hypocrisy. With the success of her recent film, she remains undeterred and continues to challenge regressive ideas in Indian cinema.
She proudly stands as a voice against the industry's double standards.
