Farzi Review: Blend Of Action And Shootouts

Farzi, a new series streaming on Amazon Prime Video, tells the story of a struggling artist in post-demonetization India who becomes a counterfeiter.

The protagonist, Sunny (played by Shahid Kapoor), is an exceptionally skilled street artist who finds himself unable to make ends meet due to the weight of loans and repayments. In an act of rebellion, he turns to crime and begins printing his own cash.

The show is a blend of several real and believable storylines that include a bromance, a grandfather-grandson relationship, a failing marriage, a cop seeking redemption, and a young professional trying to find her place in a male-dominated field.

As Sunny's counterfeiting business grows, he finds himself caught between the government's anti-counterfeiting unit, led by the tough but troubled cop Michael Vednayagam (played by Vijay Sethupathi), and a ruthless gangster who smuggles fake currency into the country.

Meanwhile, Megha Vyas (played by Raashii Khanna) joins the anti-counterfeiting task force as a Reserve Bank of India recruit and is determined to help the nation's fight against financial terrorism.

Sunny's plan to bail out his grandfather's struggling magazine quickly spirals into a full-fledged operation driven by greed and adventure. But as the stakes get higher, Sunny finds himself struggling to hold onto the people closest to him and to maintain his own emotional balance.

Meanwhile, Michael is also grappling with personal demons as he tries to regain lost ground with his family and hold on to his place in the anti-counterfeiting task force.

The series is co-written and directed by Raj & DK and expertly blends action and shootouts with an examination of the nature of need, greed, and constantly shifting relationships.

Farzi poses important questions while delivering thrills and is a must-watch for fans of the crime genre.
