Tollywood is navigating through one of its most challenging phases. Even prominent production houses are holding back on launching new projects.
The slowdown in real estate and unpredictable political climate have added to the industry's woes.
While financiers are still supporting known banners, they are no longer issuing funds freely — each film now requires separate clearance. The era of "running accounts" is over.
Projects are being greenlit only after confirmation from OTT platforms. Production begins only when a streaming partner agrees to back the film.
Companies like T-Series are reportedly supporting Mythri Movie Makers, while Sitara Entertainments is working in collaboration with MyHome Group and Aha.
Though both banners have plans in place, execution is cautious. Sitara, in particular, is not moving forward with any production unless OTT deals are secured.
Mythri, on the other hand, is currently focusing on big-ticket films. After suffering losses on several mid-range projects, the banner is stepping away from that space, barring one or two exceptions.
Producer Dil Raju has two projects lined up, including films with Vijay Deverakonda and Nithiin. Other active banners each have only a film or two in the pipeline.
Aside from Sitara and Mythri, the collective number of ongoing projects among other banners is far below previous levels.
This cautious approach has already left several small and mid-range actors without work.
Industry insiders predict that four to five more heroes may soon find themselves without any projects if the trend continues.
