The coverage of drug cases in Hyderabad by certain media channels has become more of a temporary source of entertainment rather than a serious matter. Particularly, cases involving film celebrities garner more attention than anything else.
We witnessed how the media extensively broadcasted the interrogation of various film celebrities, from Puri Jagannath to Mumaith Khan, by SIT officer Akun Sabharwal regarding the drug racket a few years ago. However, no concrete conclusions were reached, and eventually, the media stopped following up on the matter.
Now, another similar case has emerged. The police apprehended a drug peddler named KP Chowdhary, who allegedly made calls to actresses like Surekha Vani, Jyothy, and Ashu Reddy. It is quite puzzling how the police leaked such names.
The media begins to cast suspicion on these actresses, creating an impression that they could be involved in the drug mafia. It is disconcerting that receiving calls from a drug peddler alone is enough to insinuate their involvement in the crime.
It is expected that even this case will fade away without much noise. The media today lacks the attention span to sustain any news or conduct proper follow-ups.
In their quest for higher TRPs, the insensitive media plays with the lives of celebrities for the sake of sensationalism. It is truly regrettable.
The police department is also behaving irresponsibly and insensitively in this matter. Based on previous experiences, people believe the outcome will be zero.
