Donations or charity is all about social responsibility but what happens when it starts becoming an obligation or a mandatory burden? That seems to be the situation for Tollywood folks.
There was a time when cine folks used to collect donations from people and give it to government. Even media houses used to do that. But with new generation coming in, the trend in Tollywood is changing. Instead of going to people, they are donating from their earnings which is worth appreciating.
However, social media, fans, government is now making this donation thing mandatory for Tollywood folks. During Corona time, cine folks gave to both states equally. Few heroes even helped people. Since it was the start, the load was not felt. But now it is 6 months since Corona has arrived. Films have stopped, producers have to pay interest to financiers, completed films are lying idle waiting for release. At this time, the floods have hit both Telugu states especially Hyderabad.
Slowly comments are coming that one state has been paid but the other is not. If you don’t donate you are being judged. So, from obligation this donation thing seems to be becoming an obligatory burden. For instance, Prabhas announced 1 crore as donation and then changed it to 1.5 cr. Some say he changed the figure due to his pan India image and fans.
One company in Tollywood pays more than 1 cr as interest per month but even it had to donate. Honestly, only entities like Mega Engineering can give donations because they do government contracts and make loads of money.
Similarly pharma companies, hospitals who minted money but for some reason they are not to be seen. To add to the irony, politicians are donating just their one month salaries or perks. All of us know how many crores these leaders make. Even social media has vented out a lot of criticism on this.
Given that, this situation will only increase but not stop so Tollywood has to take a strong decision. They need to have a corpus fund and release part whenever such situations happen. Single payment would do it. If this method is not taken, the burden would keep on increasing for the heroes and that is not a good thing.
