Coolie Rights: Telugu Producers Feel Risky

Coolie Rights: Telugu Producers Feel Risky

Sun Pictures is making its foray into the Telugu film industry with a massive project featuring Allu Arjun and director Atlee.

The film, set to be made on a grand scale, is expected to surpass the scale and hype of Allu Arjun’s previous blockbuster, Pushpa 2.

The actor is reportedly being paid a record-breaking remuneration of ₹175 crore, along with a share in the profits.

However, despite stepping into the Telugu market, Sun Pictures has decided not to release the much-anticipated Jailer 2, starring Rajinikanth, in Telugu on its own. Instead, the production house has put the Telugu theatrical rights up for sale.

Sun Pictures will retain all rights except theatrical distribution in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and is quoting a price of ₹50 crore for the Telugu theatrical rights.

Considering this is the first collaboration between superstar Rajinikanth and hotshot director Lokesh Kanagaraj, the makers believe ₹50 crore is a fair deal. However, several Telugu producers feel the price is steep.

The film also stars Nagarjuna Akkineni, which adds some regional appeal. However, for a buyer to profit from the deal, the film would need to gross over ₹110 crore in the Telugu states — an outcome considered risky by trade circles.

Despite the high stakes, top producers such as Dil Raju, Naga Vamsi, and Asian Suniel are reportedly in talks to acquire the rights.
