An off-the-cuff comment made by megastar Chiranjeevi at the pre-release event of “Brahma Anandam” in Hyderabad on Tuesday night has kicked up a debate in the social media circles on Wednesday.
While sharing memories about his own family, right from the days of his grandfather and father, Chiranjeevi also referred to himself as “Klinkara Tatayya” (grandfather of Klinkara, daughter of his son Ram Charan).
In this regard, the megastar said: “When I am at home, I don’t feel I am with my granddaughters. I am surrounded only by girls at my house, and looking at them, it feels as if I am in a ladies’ hostel, and I am their warden.”
He went on to add: “That’s why I am a bit worried that Ram Charan might have another daughter again. I told him: please have a boy this time—he will continue our legacy.”
Though Chiranjeevi made these comments in a lighter vein, they have gone viral on social media and some women began feeling about his opinion on girl children. “What is wrong to have only girl children? Being desperate to have a male child at home shows his misogynist mentality,” a woman said.
Another woman said a personality like Chiranjeevi’s stature should not have made such statements at public events. Many other netizens took to social media to comment that his words were inappropriate.
However, some others came to the defence of the megastar. They say his comments were made in a light-hearted manner about his personal life and were not meant to undermine women.
They clarify that Chiranjeevi has always shown great respect for women and that his remarks should not be taken as his actual opinion on gender preferences.
