Chiyaan Vikram’s Thangalaan was the biggest release from Kollywood this Independence Day.
Given the significance of the holiday, the film was anticipated to perform exceptionally well on its opening day. However, it managed only a decent start, earning just over ₹20 crore.
While this figure appears respectable on its own, it falls short for a mega-budget film costing over ₹100 crore.
Directed by Pa. Ranjith, the film garnered mostly positive reviews from critics.
Audience feedback has also been favorable, particularly regarding Vikram's performance and the cast's efforts.
Nonetheless, the film’s unconventional subject and treatment raised concerns about its commercial potential, and those concerns are now becoming a reality.
On its opening day, Thangalaan grossed ₹20.19 crore worldwide, including ₹15.69 crore from India (₹13.30 crore net) and ₹4.50 crore from overseas. Despite positive word-of-mouth, the film experienced a significant 62% drop in its second day’s earnings.
On Day 2, Thangalaan brought in ₹7.66 crore gross, a sharp decline from the opening day. The film earned ₹5.66 crore gross (₹4.80 crore net) in India on Friday, with an additional ₹2 crore gross from overseas.
After two days, the domestic total stands at ₹18.10 crore net, with a gross of ₹21.35 crore in India. Internationally, the film has earned ₹6.50 crore so far, bringing the worldwide box office collection to ₹27.85 crore gross.
Thangalaan was produced on a budget of ₹135 crore. Against this cost, the film has earned only ₹18.10 crore in India to date, meaning it needs an additional ₹116.90 crore to cover its production costs.
