In the same month one year ago, Tollywood experienced a major setback when the highly anticipated movie Acharya turned out to be a failure. However, this April was marked by not just one but three major disappointments.
The first week of April saw the release of two films - Ravanasura and Meter. Ravanasura, starring Ravi Teja and boasting a cast of five heroines, had high hopes attached to it but failed to impress audiences from the very first day.
Similarly, Kiran Abbavaram's Meter, known for making movies with good content, couldn't quite pull off the commercial masala theme despite its attempt to mimic popular star heroes Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, and Balakrishna.
The month's box office was dealt another blow with the release of Sakunthalam in the second week, based on Kalidasa's Abhignanasakuntalam, and featuring Samantha in the lead role. The film failed to garner any appeal among any audience segment and was deemed the biggest flop in producer Dil Raju's career.
The release of Rudrudu and Vidudala Part-1 in the same week failed to impress the average Telugu audience as the former lacked the necessary elements, while the latter was not well-received despite its rustic drama theme.
The third week saw the release of Virupaksha, which brought some relief to Tollywood. The film starring Saidharam Tej with Samyukta Menon as the lead and directed by Karthik Dandu featured thrilling elements that attracted audiences and enjoyed success at the box office. However, the four smaller films that were released alongside Virupaksha did not perform well.
The highly anticipated Agent, directed by Surender Reddy and starring Akhil, released in the last week of April, but failed to impress audiences despite a large budget and a unique concept. Mani Ratnam's PS-2 was also released in the same week and received slightly better reviews than Part-1, but ultimately suffered the same fate as PS-1. The remaining two films released alongside PS-2 were also flops.
April witnessed disappointments from Ravanasura, Sakunthalam, and Agent, with only Virupaksha providing some excitement at the box office.
