Earlier reports suggested that Meenakshi Chaudhary had been selected for the role ahead of Women's Day (March 8), leading to widespread trolling on social media.
Amid criticism, the government’s FactCheck handle issued a statement debunking the claims and warning of legal action against the spread of false information.
"The campaign on social media claiming that actress Meenakshi Chaudhary has been appointed as the brand ambassador for Andhra Pradesh Women Empowerment is completely fake. Legal action will be taken against those who deliberately spread such false posts in the name of the government and engage in fake propaganda."
The government has urged social media users and media outlets to verify information before circulating such claims.
