Sequels in Tollywood have come a long way. Once viewed with apprehension by both audiences and makers, sequels were a gamble fraught with uncertainty.
Today, sequels have become not only common but also essential for big-budget films.
In fact, skipping a sequel for major hits is now considered newsworthy. This year, 2024, stands as a testament to this trend, with several sequels achieving blockbuster status.
The biggest headline-grabber is Pushpa-2. Makers claim it grossed Rs 294 crores worldwide on its opening day, the highest in Indian cinema history. Whether or not these numbers are accurate, Pushpa-2’s success is undeniable.
Tillu Square, the sequel to DJ Tillu, also created waves, surpassing its predecessor to enter the Rs 100-crore club. Despite initial skepticism, the film’s success has even sparked talks of a third installment.
Another surprise hit was Mattu Vadalara-2. Building on the original’s crime-comedy formula, it exceeded expectations and became a standout among small films this year.
Though flops like Double iSmart and Yatra-2 exist, 2024 has firmly established sequels as a winning formula. Anticipation now builds for upcoming releases like Devara-2, Kalki-2 and Pushpa-3.
