In a sudden twist, the producers of "Baahubali 2" have stopped giving overseas rights to the distributor they have promised earlier.
They sold of the overseas rights to a Tamil guy who came forward to acquire the rights for a whopping amount. The producers agreed to give them the rights as the price was huge.
But after realizing that the distributor’s inexperience in handling distribution network and his inability to sell off to local distributors, the producers have now backed out giving the rights to the said buyer.
Latest info is that the movie’s overseas rights have been broken into two – 1) USA- Canada region rights 2) Rest of Overseas rights.
The producers have now handed the North America’s rights to another leading distributor. The leading distributor is said to have paid record price of around Rs 40 Cr for its theatrical rights. This deal is for all languages.
This is record price for an Indian movie even Bollywood movies were not sold off for such price for USA-Canada region.
The rest of overseas rights will be with the original Tamil distributor who paid the huge amount.
But the producers are not making any official statement on this at this moment. Although the deal between the producers and the distributor has been done, the producers are strategically maintaining silence on this.
Except one or two Bollywood movies, no Indian movie bought for whopping amount. This is the craze “Baahubali 2” has in the market.
The first part “Baahubali The Beginning” fetched Rs 10 Cr for the producers from overseas rights that was bought by Blue Sky Entertainment. Now, the makers have received five times more than the original movie brought to them. “Baahubali The Beginning” grossed nearly seven million dollars in USA.
It also performed superbly in Gulf and UK. Though the film was released in many non-tradition markets, it didn’t rake in much. The film failed miserably in Mainland China but it performed in decent manner in Taiwan.
