President Donald Trump purchased a Tesla Model S outside the White House on Tuesday afternoon during an event with Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Speaking before reporters, Trump announced he would write Musk a check to pay in full. "I like signing a check! Better than this modern system where, all of a sudden, there's money in your account," he remarked.
He also noted that while Musk would likely offer him a discount, he insisted on paying the full price. "You know, I'm president, and I want to pay full price," he told the press.
Trump cited two reasons for buying the Tesla: its quality and Musk's dedication.
"It's a great product, as good as it gets. And number two, this man has devoted his energy and life to doing this."
He further praised Musk, saying, "He's been treated very unfairly by a small group of people. But he's a patriot and has done an incredible job with Tesla."
Although he confirmed he wouldn't test-drive the car himself—"I like to drive, but I'm not allowed to"—Trump shared that he also bought a Cybertruck for his granddaughter, Kai. "She's a great golfer, and she puts the clubs in the back," he added.
Trump mentioned that White House staff, including communications advisor Margo Martin, would use the Tesla. "My whole staff is excited. They're going to have a good time using it."
Musk thanked Trump for his support, saying, "It means a lot."
