The return-to-office chants by CEOs have increased. Cities and counties which depend on downtown tax revenue from restaurants, convenience stores, and other shops located in downtown and commercial real estate property management companies who are losing their rent revenue slowly started to lobby with CEOs to get their employees to work in hybrid mode for at least three days a week.
Some HR associations which make money by selling useless HR certifications and yearly membership fees also started promoting the “water cooler” innovation myth to CEO’s. It is an idiotic myth that groundbreaking IT project ideas are generated when colleagues meet when they want to collect water into their water bottles or meet for a coffee break.
Most business ideas for IT projects are usually determined by a small number of people like product managers or senior business analysts who work closely with the business users. Software developers and architects are consulted only after a project has been initiated and is already in the planning stage.
Nothing special can be achieved in an IT project by going to a physical office vs. attending the daily scrum call vs. zoom or teams. Many product companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are making hybrid work mandatory.
In contrast, the upper management from companies like Google or Facebook maybe working from exotic locations like New Zealand or Caribbean islands for their so-called personal reasons. This upper management attitude is like the colonial-era British generals who ruled India from their London headquarters while preaching the need for British junior officers to be present every day in the field.
It is better to work with smaller clients who value remote IT employees and IT contractors and understand that remote work is the most important perk in 2023.
After the 1999 Y2K boom, IT consultants can earn a quarter million dollars by doing two projects. If your current employer makes it mandatory to return to the office for hybrid work you can always switch to an IT consulting employer and do two to three remote projects simultaneously, depending on your workload handling capacity.
