Director Mani Ratnam has proved his mettle as a director and earned respect for changing the profile of Indian cinema with his films. Usually, if a new film of Mani is announced, we see distributors and exhibitors queuing up at his office to acquire the rights. In contrary to that, the distributors of Mani’s latest outing ‘Kadal’ are fuming at Mani for his unaccountability.
The story is, ‘Kadal’ was sold to distributors for exorbitant prices and with the film turning out to be a disaster, the distributors are demanding Mani to return their money as the film has incurred them heavy losses. Further, the distributors have queued up at Mani’s office and residence and started to pressurize the ace film maker.
Irked by the act of distributors, Mani has silently left for Kodaikanal on a holiday. This has added more fire to the fuel and buzz says that the distributors are planning to stage a protest in front of Mani’s office and residence till the director returns to Chennai.
However, sources close to Mani says that the entire distribution rights of ‘Kadal’ were sold to other production house on MG basis last year itself and it’s unfair for the distributors to demand Mani to refund their money? It remains to be seen how Mani comes out of this issue!
