It has been a long time since Congress MP and megastar Chiranjeevi was seen in active politics.
Except for some guest appearances among the Congress circles in Delhi, Chiranjeevi is hardly seen in any of its political activities.
After the resounding success of his 150th film Khaidi No. 150, Chiranjeevi is completely focussed on his next film Uyyalavada Narasimha Reddy.
Moreover, with the Congress party getting completely wiped out in Andhra Pradesh, the megastar has lost interest in politics, though there is a talk that he might join the BJP before 2019 elections.
On Monday, Chiranjeevi sprang a surprise issuing a statement condemning the alleged forcible evacuation of people belonging to 160 Yanadi tribe eking out livelihood as scavenders in 18th ward of Tirupati town.
He alleged that the Tirupati Municipal Corporation was trying to evict these scavengers from their colony and hand over 2.34 acres of land to private parties.
“Though the government is saying that they would be rehabilitated elsewhere, it is nothing but an attempt to drive them away from the town,” he said.
The megastar even reminded that when he was the MLA of Tirupati, he had taken up some developmental works in the Scavengers’ Colony. Now, they are being forcibly sent out.
This is against the principle of natural justice, as the government was discriminating against scavengers stating that they cannot live amidst common people, he alleged.
He demanded that the Scavengers’ Colony be developed into a modern colony with all facilities. One wonders why Chiranjeevi has suddenly developed love towards the people of Tirupati.
When he was the MLA, he had to incur the wrath of the people there as he hardly visited the constituency. After that, he had deserted the constituency and became the Rajya Sabha member. Now, he has started raising the issues of Tirupati people.
Any plans to contest from Tirupati again, Mr Chiranjeevi?
